can anybody tell me, what sort of subjects do you do in b science first year. people keep telling me that the degree is flexible, and you can do subjects like computing and maths.. but is that in your final year? or is that from your first year?
i am under the impression that you do physics chem and bio through first year. is this wrong?
heelp =(
thanks alot.

hmm, clicking on the links below it looks like you can choose an area??

(quick crash course since i didn't know ANYTHING this time last year. 100 level - first year subjects, 200 level - 2nd year etc. (generally). each subject is worth a certain number of credit points (cp), like units for the hsc. to get a degree you have to do the subjects they tell you to, plus a specific number of cp. since the subjects they tell you to do are generally less than the required cp, you can fill the rest of your degree with whatever else you want to do.)

take for example, "chemistry"
"At least 12 credit points of CHEM units including at least one of CHEM325 or CHEM329 and at least one of CHEM330 or CHEM331"
so you have to look at those courses, pick which ones you want to do. to do them you will have to do prerequisites, so look at the 100 and 200 level subjects you have to do as prerequisites. then the rest can be electives, of any kind, as long as you satisfy the requirements.

... - i think. the only thing that sounds suss to me is that you can do bsci and then make it totally based on one area such as chem, that's why i am not sure

http://handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=CHEM - the chem subjects

i clicked on CHEM325. http://handbook.mq.edu.au/unit.php?unitCode=CHEM325

"Preqrequisites: CHEM204(P); CHEM207(P) or CHEM337 (or as corequisite); CHEM208 (P)

Corequisites: CHEM337 (alternative to CHEM207 or CHEM337 prerequisite)"

prerequisites = you have to do before you get to this subject
so at 200 level you have to do chem204, chem208 and either chem207or chem337

co requisites = you must at the same time or before you do this subject.

you'll have to look up those 200 level courses and see what you have to do at 100 level.

when you do it with all the subjects, you can see how many credit points you have left over to fill with other subjects.

each semester you can do from 9-14cp (recommended 12. at first year this is 4 subjects, 3cp each)

edit: glad to help!

i didn't get it until i had to make my timetable

don't take this as the be all and end all, i am doing an example, i might make mistakes since i haven't done this for a year

Pretend I am doing the degree,

I will do:
CHEM325
CHEM330

CHEM325 prerequisites, I choose:
CHEM204
CHEM208
CHEM337

CHEM330 prerequisites:
CHEM204 3cp
_

CHEM204 prerequisites, I choose:
CHEM102
CHEM103

CHEM208 prerequisites, I choose:
CHEM102

CHEM337 prerequisites:
CHEM207
_

CHEM207 prerequisites:
CHEM102

So, condensing all the subjects:

Chem102 3cp
Chem103 3cp

Chem204 3cp
Chem207 3cp
Chem208 3cp

Chem325 4cp
Chem330 3cp
Chem337 3cp

So you have to do at least 12cp of chem units, that’s fine, you have 25cp of chem. already.

Just to simplify it, you should be able to choose electives for the rest of your credit points.

That looks mighty complicated above. On the open day in a week or two they will have lots of people to talk to, if you go there with questions they can fix any mistakes I might have made and may make more sense!

okay, thanks. that really helps. i think i will go to the open day. no matter how many different ways i read things, stuff only makes sence when its told to me. even then, it takes a while to register.
but you really helped. thanks heaps!!

ok to put it even simplier.. you pick a program from the b. science (link above) degree...
if it doesn't have a specific course structure indicating what you have to do, then you gotta work our your program based on what is core.

so you start with core final year units (300 level) and work your way backwards fullfilling those pre- requisites (usually 200 level units).. and then you pick units that fullfill those pre- requisites.. and so on..

once you've done all core and their pre- requisites, you should then pick out what electives you want to do to satisfy the required 200 and 300 level. take note that 200 and 300 level units also have pre- requisites so you gotta work backwards from those 300 level units....

General Requirements

1. Obtain an aggregate of at least 68 credit points, including
2. at least 38 credit points in units at 200 level or above, and
3. at least 34 credit points in units at 200 level or above designated in the Schedule of Units of Study as science units
4. at least 18 credit points in units at 300 level or above designated in the Schedule of Units of Study as science units
5. and completion of other specific requirements as set out in the Schedule of Undergraduate Programs including an approved coherent study at 300 level
that "coherent study" thing (point 5) will place restrictions on you.

this is mine

http://handbook.mq.edu.au/programofstudy.php?code=CMP02

9 credit points from units in the range COMP300-COMP351, ELEC374
so i have to do 3 subjects from that range (1 subj = 3cp) and to do those subjects ill have to meet the prerequisites.

so strictly speaking theres no compulsory subjects, but you have to choose a program of coherent study sometime (usually 2nd year) and that will restrict you a bit. you get to choose what it is though.

compare this with http://handbook.mq.edu.au/programofstudy.php?code=AH001

which is what you do for a BCompSc. they have some designated "core" subjects that you have to do to get BCompSc written on your degree vs BSc (Computing)

some units require admission to a certain degree to do, but they're for fairly specific degrees such as law or some of the BTech units.

wow. sorry, just checked up here. thanks. that all made more sence than it first did.
i was talking to a friend, and she said that bsc was similar to ba. she did b.Arts for a semester, then transferred to BBA. she went into ba to transfer. so does this mean, she could pick the BBA subjects while doing ba for the first 6months? cos then she wouldnt be behind when she transfered. or is that not possible?

yes that should be possible since ba is very flexible and is mainly made up of electives.

you'd have to check the core BBA units... most of them have pre- requisites that you must be enrolled in the BBA degree....
http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=BBA

but that said, you don't only do units with the prefix BBA in them..... the core units for a straight BBA degree are:
ACCG105, ACST101, BBA102 or ECON110/111, BBA103, BBA111, MKTG101, DEM127/STAT170/STAT171, COMPxxx.....

from the following core units above, ACST101, MKTG101, STAT170 and COMPxxx(123/115/114) DON"T have any pre- reqs so you could do those 4 subjects in first semester and not be behind in the degree...
