i would suggest if you have concerns about criminology that are serious take the int. business course - its surprisingly broad actually:)

plus - keep in mind UWS has a 'guaranteed internal transfer' ie if you get a credit average i think? you can transfer after 1styear..

so it may not be too disastrous if you pick the 'wrong course'

i would strongly suggest you go to D Day at UWS - you should get stuff in teh mail abobut it otherwise keep an eye on the uws website - www.uws.edu.au - go via the link on the left that says 'future students' - as this may help you decide better..

its pretty useless aksing students really as if your concerns are about job prospects, its best to ask lecturers or graduates or professionals in that field - so definetely! go to D Day.

also it depends on what you reckon you will excel at....if you got an interest in crim, and you do well, a myriad of opportunities will exist for you...
also teh uais are last years, so they may change depending on demand, take that as a note...

i thinkd-day is on the 3rd of january? please correct if im wrong, but if you live in the western sydney area, you should be receiveing letters fom uws abotu the dates...

If you want to learn a left-wing, socialist diatribe on the instances of crime in society, by all means choose the B SoSc (Crim).. .. however if that interests you, go for it..

However, in a more career oriented approach, the B Bus would definitely be more flexible and provide greater scope for opportunity depending on the subjects chosen etc etc..

Criminology is a big area. The reality is you don't look in the paper for the job of "Criminologist", that is more or less an academic post. But criminology itself is generally regarded a good ground to enter fields such as intelligence, law enforcement and policy departments.

Also DON"T think that criminology is a waste in terms of demand. Crime Prevention in the private sector pulls in millions every year. If you do consultancy in crime prevention - you could be in high demand. Behavioural sciences are big in this field!

from what i u nderstand of the course and from the work i have seen that friends do in this course - its far from left-wing dominated theoretical crap.... have a look at the handbook for the course on the net - you'll see there are plenty of varying areas you can study especially when choosing elective units...

plus there are many career opportunities as long as you don't narrow your options - ie as long as you don't have only one specific job in mind... its not like teaching or nursing or things like that where there's always going to be a high level or demand... so as long as you have a few options its unlikely you will be left with no career choices...

its the same for business really... as long as you have a few options in mind you will get a job but if you are hell bent on some specific area, regardless of the fact that such a course has many areas of work available, you will find it hard to get a job...

dont make the mistake that many students make of assuming that by doing a criminology degree you become a criminal investigator or researcher and by doing a business degree you become some guy in an office who plans crap all day for a shitload of money...

the course name does not equate to the career as such necessarily - so rather than ask students about this kinda thing - go along to D Day, have a look at the handbook on the website, talk to friends or family or whatever who may work in related industries or even email companies you know who do the kind of work you do - you'd be surprised how many are willing to reply :)
