They are cutting it out for the 2006 HSC but then again they are replacing it with a new topic called wars in Europe and most schools will probably end up doing that anyway.

But yeah theres plenty of stuff to write about Stalingrad. It was the first major defeat for the Germans, highlihgted the stubborness of HItler (and how that was a negative in terms of war planning and strategy), Huge casualtes (in the hundreds of thousands if my memory is correct), and it triggered teh start of the Russian push west. By mid 1944 the Allies were advancing East throguh France and within a year nazi Germany collapsed.

Stalingrad was the first step in the military defeat of the Nazis. The German army had suffered huge losses in Stalingrad and morale was dramatically affected. Thus the Germans didn't have much enthusiasm for fighting anymore particular since Hitler refused to allow them to retreat from Stalingrad. As well, the German Army went on to Leningrad with severly depleted forces resulting in their defeat there also. Because the German army failed to defeat the Soviet forces in Stalingrad and Leningrad, the Soviet forces were then able to push through Eastern Europe arriving in Berlin in May 1945. Simultaneously, the Allies were also pushing through Italy and France (e.g. Normandy landing) so Germany had a war on three fronts which it could not cope with.
Stalingrad was just one part of the military defeat of Nazism. Don't forget also that the germans had failed to defeat Britain so Britain was able to bomb Germany quite effectively towards the end of the war hence devasting morale on the home front.
On the home front germany was unable to cope with wartime production for a number of reasons including the very late introduction of women into the workforce.
