Ive seen alot of peoples HSC marks, usually the assesment and exam is 4 marks apart... e.g (82+86)/2 = 84 HSC mark.

Has there ever been something like (60+90)/2 = 75?

and *some* people say that if your rank is unusually low, you get your exam mark or something like that.. what truth is there to that?

usually if you perform badly at school you perform badly at the hsc exam. The trials are indicative of what you will get and thus a low rank will usually result in a low hsc exam mark.

yes im wonder as well if there has been someone with a 60+90

the guy must of studied his ass off :)

i say that because if you didn't pull yourself up in time for the trials after saying so many times that you will study ( i did that ). then i don't think the hsc will be that much better. But yeah anything is possible :)

Geoff Masters' Review of the 2001 HSC included an analysis of the correlations between examination marks and school assessment marks (page 65).

Some submissions claimed that, because of the different systems operating for HSC examinations and school assessments in 2001, disparities between students school assessments and examination marks were greater than in the past. An analysis of correlations between examination marks and school assessment marks (summarised in Table 6.1) appears not to support these claims.

A perfect correlation would be 1.00, and a 'good' correlation is generally around 0.75.

so..... if say someone is ranked last... and that person gets 90 in the exam...

and the last exam mark is say 10.. for e.g

so it will still be an average of both?

Probably because most students don't magically perform outstandingly well in the HSC exams after doing no work all year. :)

It's certainly possible. Whilst they're not quite as extreme as your example, I've seen the following marks:

2002
Business Studies 91/100 83/100 87
Chemistry 65/100 74/100 70
English Extension 1 47/50 40/50 44
English Extension 2 31/50 47/50 39
History Extension 47/50 27/50 37
Mathematics 89/100 79/100 84
Mathematics 74/100 86/100 80
Physics 70/100 86/100 78
Physics 80/100 71/100 76
Software Design and Development 75/100 67/100 71

2001
Business Studies 88/100 78/100 83
English (Advanced) 82/100 94/100 88
English (Advanced) 79/100 67/100 73
English Extension 2 38/50 47/50 43
Information Processes and Technology 73/100 82/100 78
Information Processes & Technology 90/100 79/100 85
Legal Studies 66/100 84/100 75
Mathematics 39/100 60/100 50
Mathematics Extension 1 91/100 81/100 86
Mathematics Extension 1 33/50 23/50 28
Physics 75/100 84/100 80
Physics 67/100 78/100 73
Studies of Religion I 39/50 47/50 43

2000
Chemistry 93/100 83/100 88
Computing Studies 2u (Common) 80/100 94/100 87

Thats a huge difference in history extension, did s/he just bum out in the hsc exam?

OTOH that english extension mark went up heaps.

So is it that your rank determines your internal mark, and actual hsc mark is your hsc mark, so say in the hsc exam, you got 80, but are ranked 10th in the grade, and the 10th highest hsc mark was 50, so your internal mark is 50 and external mark is 80 == median mark of 65?

Almost. Your moderated assessment mark may not actually be equal to the 10th highest exam mark (depending on the entire distribution of marks from your class), but it should be reasonably close.

If a person gets 100% for their IT trials (or another subject where their mark depends on their HSC exam performance), does that mean that they can fake being sick/injured and get 100% for their HSC exam?

It's theoretically possible, but I think it would be determined on a case-by-case basis. Particularly with regard to a mark of 100, certain precautions would have to be taken (possibly reviewing the student's work).
