Long answer: Hell yes.

Really long answer: You're expected to have them for lectures, assignments, etc.

Qualification of above answers: This all holds true for science/maths/a few other subjects I've seen. I'm pretty sure it's true for all courses.

if you don't want to buy them, sometimes lecturers put copies in the short loans for people to borrow.
