i've got the uai to get into both, but not sure which one is better. my ultimate goal is to transfer to com/law at unsw...so would it be better to start off with com/law at another uni (uts or mac), or straight commerce at unsw?

Macquarie, hands down.
I believe both law schools are good in their own ways. You can get decent jobs once you graduate from either one. I think Macquarie has a better reputation for commerce though.
Although that, UNSW and USYD have more connections to higher positions. If you wish to score a more "wow" job in a big firm, then go to UNSW and USYD.
I was in the exact same situation as you, having an interest in law but don't really want to do law at either uni. And I really want to do double major in Commerce. So I have decided to do a commerce degree and probably do graduate law later (..7 years is pretty long thou.. =( )
