Can anyone do extension two mathematics. In university, clearly applied mathematics is significantly harder than extension two, and yet a number of people that do applied mathematics did not do extension two maths.

If you work hard, can people of low "natural ability" succeed in extension two?
is their a certain element of being able to identify things that no amount of study can help?

Natural ability can help but by no means does it determine whether you are cable or not of doing 4u.
If you enjoy maths and your willing to put in the effort then by all means go for 4u. If you realise later on that 4u isn't for you, you can always drop it.

I just ask because I have recently started accelerated year 10 maths and am struggling with some of the extension questions in the Cambridge 3 unit prelim book.

Anyone can do Ext 2 Maths (unless u have a disability), its just how much work u can put into it that matters. The more questions you do (understanding the concept of the questions), the better you are.

Just study hard and put more hours into 3U (I don't think Year 10 really matters that much) because u have another 2 years ahead of you.

As DefiningTheta stated, focus more on 3U and make sure you nail and establish a strong foundation since 4u generally requires a great and in-depth understanding of many topics.

You relearn what you need to know of 4u in uni anyway. Also, uni mathematics is harder than high school mathematics.

And yes, they can. And there is some conceptual things you just need to convince yourself. But that shouldn't be too hard.

Well, obviously. Extension questions are supposed to challenge 3 unit students, and they're really perhaps only for the very best and brightest Year 10 maths students who already have had a previous exposure to the material.

Im going to disagree with everyone here, Extension 2 does require some sort of natural ability. No matter how hard you try sometimes you wont be able to get it, and thats the simple truth of it. It also depends on what you mean by succeed since that is subjective.

Extension 2 is supposed to be hard, and its where the rote learners of math will see their downfall. Its where if you dont understand something it will have a domino effect and will bite you back hard. If someone has a low natural ability, their ability to grasp advanced logical concepts is one that might just not be sufficient enough for 4U.

I will say this however, many people doubt their mathematical ability and they think that they have low natural ability when in reality that is not true. People can have wrong impressions of their own ability but the truth must be spoken, that no matter how hard one works, sometimes you just cant succeed.

Dont let your own stigma of your own ability not let you to try 4U, give it a go and see how it is.

yes, this is exactly right. i've talked to so many teachers about the possibility of doing extension 2 and they all say you need to have a natural talent and passion for maths. hard work can only get you so far...

+1

Remember that 3U --> 4U is a huge stepping stone.

They probably will do fine, but the brighter ones will be at the top because they can just "see it" better than us normal people can

There's a limit to a human's ability. Saying that, it doesn't hurt to push it a little.

I respectfully beg to differ. The further you go in life the more you realise that hard work trumps nearly any amount of natural talent. MX2 is certainly not so difficult that natural talent should pose a real barrier to those who are determined enough.

Can anyone do extension 2? Yes
Should anyone do extension 2? Probably not.
While it's possible it wont hurt other subjects if you are entirely organised, there's a good chance you will if you slack off early. Give it a go though, and see how you go.
