Does anyone know of any reliable and qualified technicians who can install a central splitter? ... someone who can service the north shore.

Best bet is the Yellow Pages for computer technicians. Ring around and see how much they're charging, unless someone can suggest someone close by for you, which would save you some time =)

Can any computer tech do it?
Coz I heard that if they aren't qualified then the installation is actually "illegal" (even if they can do it)... meh.

pfft u can do it urself. Just dont screw it up or ur in trouble.
LOL...well that's what I'd be afraid of.
Plus, I wouldn't know where to get all the equipment + it's illegal since I'm not a qualified technician = not even gonna consider doing it myself :)

Yeah telephone wiring is incredibly easy 'to do stuff with.' Power on the otherhand...... Central Splitters are like $30 off ebay. I was going to install one myself, but then i got cable.

Yea, but to install a central splitter I'd have to drill a hole in the wall and stuff...not exactly what I'd be daring enough to do (don't have the tools anyway).

Just out of curiosity....what made you get cable instead of ADSL? Won't ADSL eventually have faster speeds than cable anyway (without having to share the line as well), once ADSL 2/2+ are ratified?

If you have more than three ? telephone extensions, or if you have a back-to-base alarm system that uses a phone line, you need a splitter to split the wire into more connections.

Btw. there's no monthly charge from Telstra for having an extra ADSL socket is there? And can you use the ADSL line as a telephone line? Or will it just not work?

Oh yea, having a central splitter means you don't need an in-line filter doesn't it?

ADSL is shit slow, i get pissed with cable even nowdays. Ill change when i see something faster. No point being stuck on 1500 plan for ages until adsl2 comes out. Cos ill be waiting a long time, plus who knows what the service will be like, until its actually out. Look what happened to Telstra when they released their adsl, service was so bad, they had to refund a lot of people, for downtime.

ADSL socket is just a normal telephone outlet. If u have too many filters on a line, ull get shit quality so thats why you install a central splitter, so that the quality doesnt degrade so much.

Seeing as ADSL 2/2+ will be ratified within a few months, it might be worth getting ADSL. Even iPrimus has a 2-6Mbps plan which is faster than cable (in a busy area) provided you get max. speed (i.e. 6Mbps)

And why would you be frustrated with cable? You don't really need that much speed unless you're downloading movies and other stuff ;) - besides, even a 1GB movie only takes 15 mins with cable on a good day (@ 1MB/s)

Uh no. I get 800kb regularly. 6mpbs would be shit. Remember theyre all theoretical speeds. No cable is still slow browsing, i want it to be instant :( I dont care about downloads. And when adsl2 comes out and its faster than cable then tell me. You dont know the industry if ur relying on it being "ratified in a few months."

2-6mbps is still slow, that equates to at most 900kb ish.

Depends where you live though...where I live I wouldn't expect cable speeds any higher than ~300KB/s during "peak hour" (busy area with office blocks/buildings/schools etc). So for me, ADSL would probably be better.

Btw. why wouldn't browsing be instant?
If you don't care about downloads then why do you need the speed (except for Counterstrike etc)?

I said before. I still find browsing slow with cable....Its not always instant...Yeah that would suck living in a busy area, cos then cable speeds become so slow. When adsl is super fast then ill consider it, but for now 10mpbs goodness.

I don't see much point in splitting the connection, it would be a lot easier to run the connection into a wireless router or something (802.11g or even 802.11a). Or to run ethernet cabling and install ports all over the house.

When my family redoes this house up, I'm going to be installing a Lot of ethernet cabling all through the house, because the technology will soon allow me to connect everything to each other.

A splitter is used to separate the telephone and ADSL signals on a phone line. Running an ADSL connection into a router doesn't give you anywhere to connect your telephone.
