I am starting a bachelor of arts/ law this year at macquarie when uni starts. I thought that by doing a bachelor of arts (one of the broadest degrees around) it would give me the chance to try a few subjects in the arts degree in my first year and from there start majoring in one of the first year units I studied which best interested me.
However apparently because I am doing a combined degree I don't get the flexibility of this and I was told at the info day that I should know my major/ start picking the units of a particular major from the start as there isn't enough room to do many non-major related electives (maybe only 2 altogether in the whole degree).
My dilemma now is that I chose an arts degree because of my interest in it, but also I thought it would give me the flexibility to pick a few subjects of my interest before deciding on a major. Having just completed my HSC not that long ago really, this is quite stressful as I've tried narrowing down my options but I still have a quite a few majors I am interested in and unsure which would be best.
I don't want to, say, start studying units from the major of history and then realise I hate it or would have found something like a major in international relations or politics more relevant or realise creative writing would have been more practical as I have a better understanding of the type of career I would be interested in. I'm still quite young and will probably change my mind as I mature, have more experience and go through the degree.
My question is, if you start studying some arts units in your first year of a combined degree with law is it possible to change, or when is it appropriate to change. And what majors do you think are more useful or practical in the arts degree and would combine well with a law degree.
I've heard of the system of credit points and having to complete a certain amount of credit points. How many credit points in a combined degree do you get to study some other subjects of interest. Thanks.
Some of the majors I was considering include:
creative writing
international communication
international relations
politics
history
french
psychology
human resources
So I'm not sure if I should major in something of interest like history or politics or something that looks a bit more practicable such as human resources, communication or writing or a major that compliments a law degree like Public Policy, Law and Governance, or is that too similar? At the end of the day I will have a major HECs debt so I want to choose wisely. Thanks, sorry for long post btw.
