aiight, what does it mean when they say the length of a common tangent of two circles that meet externally?

I'm guessing that common tangents are lines which are tangents to both circles, like the red lines in the following picture (hehe don't make fun of my noob PSP skills 
). I think that it is the length of these red lines you need to find.
