1) What is the ATAR and how is it calculated? I know its based on your year 11 / 12 subjects so would that mean that your yearly mark for those subjects would be your ATAR?
2)WHen you do your HSC , is it only 1 test? or a series of tests for every subject ? What if you did bad in one HSC but excelled significantly in another HSC?

Thanks!

Your ATAR is 50% school assessments 50% final hsc exam.

Your school assessments are the ones you do throughout yr12 only, not yr11.

As has been said earlier your hsc marks are composed of 50% school stuff and 50% final hsc exam. That's where its a bit confusing since the externals are often called "the HSC" but technically all of year 12 is.

So ATAR seems to be 50% of your school work in year 12 and 50% of your HSC exam marks, right? One more thing, is there a HSC for every subject you do..?

The HSC is the final year of high school. To get the marks for the HSC students sit a series of school based tasks which result in a mark being sent into the Board of Studies. Then students sit an externally set exam in each subject (except Ext 2 English which is externally marked through their major work). After all these exams and major works etc are marked the school based marks are moderated. Students then get two marks - one moderated school mark and one external exam mark - these are averaged to give the final HSC marks.

Then the marks are sent to another body called UAC who compare all the marks - called scaling - to determine the rank of students from top to bottom and that rank is reported as the ATAR - or Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank.
