The original (you must remember that it is the directors cut that is studied) was produced in the 1980's when computers were becoming increasingly common, many low skilled jobs were being replaced by computer controlled machinery and it was still a thing that was only usuable to a minority.
The cold war was coming to an end and diplomatic relationships between the communist powers and the USA were improving.
But focus mainly on the computer usuage, as they were becoming more and more common place the idea of rapid advancement and genetic creation (something of which we are approaching now) was seen as a realistic possibility in 40yrs.
