I remember from the school certificate that in order to get beter marks you needed to cover certain sections i.e punctuation, flair etc. So teachers suggested using metaphors, semi-colons, rhetorical questions and creative punctuation etc. For the creative writing section do you think the same would apply? Should I be deliberately trying to incorporate aspects such as similies and alliteration into my piece of writing? or just get on with the story?

I really don't think it will hurt to get a little bit creative. In the end, the marker's will want you display a good knowledge of poetic techniques such as simile and metaphor as well as knowledge of your texts.

Prove to the markers that you're an intelligent person that writes clearly, cleverly and creatively and you'll succeed.
