Is anyone doing Representation? Or have some good pointers for the 500 word essay?

For all intents and purposes, it shouldn't be too hard... so why am I finding it so difficult? *had same problem with ENGL120 assessment*

Representation yeah doing that..

The premise of representation is that, all meaning is socially and culturally contextual and constructed. We see things as:

• to stand for – as in the case of a flag which stands for, or symbolizes a nation. In
the documentary that we are going to watch you’ll see all sorts of symbols or
representations of things such as America, progress, masculinity, and so on.
• To speak or act on behalf of – as when a spokesperson voices the concerns of a
group. A person who represents a group may do so in a symbolic sense. For
example, in the documentary that we are about to see, the American astronauts
represent their nation. In a broader sense, when in 1969 Neil Armstrong declared,
as he put his foot on the moon, that he was this represented “one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind” he was also representing himself as the
representative of ‘humankind’.
• Lastly, ‘to represent’ also means to re-present – to make something present which
once was but no longer is. So, in the footage that we are about to see all sort of socalled
historic events will take place before our eyes even though they actually
occurred decades ago.

I don't do CUL100, but I do politics from the humanities department...and they're actually quite interesting. John Faulkner from the labor party did a lecture for us on Monday! So yeh...it's quite good.

CUL100 essays... *shudder*

All Uni essays honestly seem to take 5 times longer than a reasonable essay should. *shakes fist*

I'm going to do the second question..I read them all aloud in order to demonstrate to my brother the overall wank factor in cul studies...question 2 was the only one that made vague sense to my addled brain once i read it aloud.

Sounds about right doesnt it :S

Yeah i think 1 or 2 were the only ones which made some semblance of sense, 1 is more of a theoretical philosophical jerk session
