Your 4 unit english mark would count as one unit, while your physics mark would count as two units, for your UAI.

It depends on the scaling given to the subject (I think it's called sacling ... Year 12 is ancient history to me); some subjects will count more than others, but you shouldn't choose subjects based on how well they scale because it changes from year to year and is impossible to predict. From what I understand, scaling is based on the number of students doing that subject, the demand for those subjects at university and a whole range of factors that are difficult to determine. Even then, scaling counts for very little overall so don't assume scaling will save your mark or that picking subjects that scale well will improve your mark because it's a double-edged sword; it works both ways. If you do poorly, the overall effect on your mark will reflect it as you may come down. Again, it's only a slight change, but it still happens. You're better off doing well in subjects that don't scale well than being in those that do but performing poorly. A lot of people in my year made that mistake thinking they could knock their marks up a notch, only to get into the Year 12 course and find they had a lot of difficulties, but couldn't change the subjects.

But don't take that as Gospel, a lot's happened since Year 12 for me.
