Doing tutoring after HSC? (2 Viewers)

I was thinking of tutoring other kids after my HSC, more specifically IT/SDD/General maths/chemistry, anyone tried this or done it before? is it any good? hard to find people? im not shy or anything in terms of talking, I was thinking for subjects such as SDD to set my own case scenario but still use HSC-type (maybe identical, I may switch certain words such as instead of discuss, describe and discuss to add depth)- Does it seem like a good idea? Currently im 2/27 in SDD

I was actually thinking of a similar thing, except with English/Modern History. Prelim students struggling with essays and such, give them a hand, get some cash in the process.

Like Casmira, I'd like to hear of anyone who's done it before.

Im seriously thinking of making my own notes for the people, maybe algorithm sections, case scenario sections, or if im really keep i can compare criteria sheets and do topics (but I think its best to learn it as a hole than individual)

for general maths i'd probably just go through the whole course, or tutor individual, and help with graphics calc cause I basically figured out how to use the entire thing for the entire statistics course

for chemistry i'd be more inclined to help with students understanding concepts, there is limitless supply of questions/series of questions i can supply, along with hw

for IT i can help students link together key terms / comeptenceies / processes, extended responses, im aiming IT at your average student who cant turn on a computer

well, i've got a friend who tutors physics. he's a first year uni student who did physics during his hsc year (got a mark of 92). he's got a class of about 4-5 year 12 students and teaches in his garage. charges $20 each per hour, and he's quite rich at the moment.

if you do plan on doing it, make sure you have notes to give out to your students - they're willing to pay money for them.

If anything, I'm more than happy to make my own notes for subjects with rare notes such as SDD/IT, I got currently a 43 page summary of all SDD topics except OPT2, developing software solution, maintenance and testing and evaluation

Im more than willing to take it the next step (for all subjects) but is there really a demand for it? no point in me making some great notes and then find nobody comes at all

true. i mean, physics students generally have parents who are concerned about the hsc - so they're willing to part with their hard earned cash. sdd students, however, may not.

doesn't hurt to ask around though.

true, but i do have 'a science' (chemistry) and a 'maths' (general maths) up my sleeve, dont laugh about tutoring general maths i see people failing

I know people who have done this before and it is much more common than you might think. Usually, once people recieve their UAI scores, they can use it to show off and attract potential students.
Usually the most successful ones that I've heard of in terms of finding students, have scored a UAI of 99+ or have come in the top 20 in a subject or two.

This isn't identical... but I've been tutoring for the past year (I've pretty much stopped now 'cos of the HSC), kids from year 7 - 10, I was making $100 a week at one point. You find it's hard to get the first few kids, but once that happens, I know I was inundated with calls from parents whose child-had-told-them-their-friend-was-getting-tutoring-and-oh-I-thought-it-was-a-good-idea. Also around exam times. I tutor both maths and english, ie/ helping them with assignments and reports and stuff. Don't expect to get students immediately after the HSC, or even early next year -- people haven't figured out by then that they need tutoring, or their parents haven't seen them fail yet etc. Around half-yearlies (which for year 12 would be term 1 or so, hey? Meh) people start panicking haha.

I wish I had a private tutor. My learning time would be used much more effectively. I think that it is pretty unfair that there are no internal assessments and that the HSC counts for everything for those who are homeschooled / have private tutors. It would be so much easier for them to achieve ridiculously high marks because they would basically have the entire year to study for just one test. It's nonsensical.

I heard CQU students pay something like $40/hour to help them with their studies. You know CQU in Sydney being an International student thingy.

Also CQU being CQU, the work wouldn't be that hard either.

i really do want to tutor subjects after my hsc if i get band 6's in any of them....i prolly would tutor english and legal. you can get heaps from tutoring in one week, my maths tutor charges 25 bucks an hour and she has like 4 students who take atleast 2 hrs each.....imagine that man, srsly, 200 bloody bucks a week! that would be heaven....

Yeah, I suppose if we're talking that kind of money I could very easily tutor 2unit advanced maths. Wouldn't feel comfortable teaching 3unit though hehe

On the same subject, would it be better to tutor privately and keep the money you make but risk not having many students, or join one of those companies an maybe have to give 10% back or something, but almost definitely be garunteed a job?
