I pulled strings to get http://fosweb.com
A hosting company had a logo choosing competition, and they all sucked, so I revamped one of them, then they decided to use my logo, without even telling me or giving me the prize from the comp. So I sent them a nice email...
So at the moment I am on a $22 per month hosting plan, and they registered my domain for free also.

Are you sure you want a domain now? Most Australian hosts are shit expensive, like, $22 a month is a ripoff for 20 megs space.
You are probably better off buying hosting overseas, where you can get as low as $5 a month. I'm not sure if this is a safe bet either though, because I've never been with one...
What you want in a host:
- Unlimited traffic!
- Email(s)
- CGI/PHP/etc
- At least 20 megs... And if you plan on putting any graphic work/photos up you will use that really quickly.

Registering a domain: the best place to get this would be http://www.melbourneit.com.au unless whoever you decide to get hosted by will do it for you, and then that is the best thing to do because they will automatically delegate the domain to their servers at no extra cost.
Domain names are fairly expensive in Aus again, being about $70 to register a .com for one year, and much more for a .com.au...

It all adds up when they start sending you bills... If you end up with a $20 a month bill then it gets costly...

I think Jeo (or was it Jesh?) had a little thing up saying they were offering hosting ages ago. This is like how I got my first site, just hosted on a friends server and subdomained from his domain. Thats free, and 'almost' as good as having your own.
But at the moment, I dont have the time or space to host, so I cant help you with that.

Yes Fosweb's reply is extremely comprehensive, please take good care in reading it, if you would like further assitance from us, we'd advise you to provide us with a little more feedback on what your site will be used for etc... is it serious, because if your planning to i duno say open a site and write your site under ASP.NET, your service will obviously have to have ASP enabled on the server side.

i got http://fakin-it.org registered at godaddy.com for around $AUD15 a year...

and it's hosted at addaction.net. i searched around and they have the best deals - check it out! it's 6months free so it's only $AUD65 for ur first yr - and my friend and i are sharing the hosting account (they have addon domains), so that means i've only paid around $32 for the hosting.

they give you 500MB space, 10GB bandwith, and loads more. i've never had downtime, or not that i know of, anyway :p the people are really helpful, adn they answer your questions within one or two hours O___o;; speedy service!!

good luck!
