i noticed there are 2 AC motors: universal and induction. now, which one are we required to know?

Im not completely sure about this either, like with some texts they dont mention universal motors and some do, so confusing. Im trying to summarise this bit at the moment.

The dot point says:
- describe the main features of an AC electric motor.

so ive just pretty much said that simple AC motors are identical to:
- DC motors but with a slip ring commutator instead of a split ring commutator
- AC generators except with an input of electrical energy and output kinetic.
Simple AC motors are either single phase ( e.g. universal motors --> short description) or polyphase ( e.g. three phase synchronous motor? --> short description).

Universal motors aren't specified under the syllabus, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't crop up.

My advice would be to learn both but also the exam will mainly focus on AC induction motors. Check HSC online.
