if you are doing a double degree why does it take less than the combined time for 2 degree's, do u have to do more work or do u just do less options or somthing?

in some cases, u do less options ....
usually, any single degree in uni comprises of "free electives" ... courses u do outside ur area of study to make ur degree more 'interesting' and to have variety. but in a double degree, u dont have electives, instead the slots allocated to the electives will be taken up by the subjects of the 2nd degree

wouldnt that mean ppl with dbl degrees are less trained in each area than say a person with a single degree? especially if they combine somefin unrelated like arts / eng or somefin

Answering a quote with another quote...
Those free electives are generally not related to your major, and hence not important. Therefore, by replacing those subjects with subjects required for another degree you can earn two degrees without "wasting" four semesters on subjects you don't even need. The variety is still there because double degrees usually come from different faculties (which is where the free electives would have been drawn from in a single degree). It's a very clever way to more efficiently spend your time in university, but can be excessively taxing if you don't love BOTH fields of study.

oh so the electives are THAT unrelated to ur area of study that they help none at all? thats hard to believe
i still think there is a huge benefit (besides saving a year) of doing a single degree as opposed to a double

it seriously depends on how many engg subjects and commerce subjects u do in that particular semester. the more engg subjects, longer the hrs. some semesters, u mgith do all engg subjects (abt 24 hrs a wk), other times u might do all comm (abt 13-14 hrs) or a bit of each (abt 18 hrs)

well .... that too (as i just realised) differs from uni to uni. at unsw, its 3 for commerce

wat about going even further instead, and getting a masters or even a doctorate degree? thats about an extra 3 years, instead of 1, but wouldnt that be so much better than 2 standard-issue degrees?Originally posted by Cyph
For me, I think it's well worth doing another year of Uni and coming out with 2 degrees - gives me better jobs prospects I believe. If the IT industry is still dead when I graduate, I'll look into a job as a financial advisor. And even if I do get a job in the IT industry, I don't think my degree will be worthless, I should have enough knowledge to invest all the $$$ I earn from working in the IT industry and make it increase exponentially.

yes it would. but a masters degree is very very specialised ... so do one only if u know exactly what ure interested in
