I had my first uni introduction today, and while there, the lecturer said that it is possible to major in two different subjects for your degree if you stick with the electives from 1st year. I honestly had no idea that this was possible, and this seems to solve the problem I've had deciding whether I should do a Science or a Business degree (I've been offered a Science degree at Monash so far, but I might get a Business offer from another uni in 2nd round).

Anyway, after discovering this, I'm hoping to do a double major for my Science degree, with one major being in Science (naturally) and another in Commerce. My question is, does the 2nd major you do (in this case, Commerce), do anything for you in the future? i.e. can it help you get into a Business AND Science job? Or is the 2nd major just for show to make you look good because it isn't a part of a Business degree?

Thanks in advance.

It might be a bit harder to have your timetable fit in if your two majors are from different faculties. But other than that, I guess it is theoretically possible to do it as long as you are signed up for a general science degree (and not a specialist degree).

I really have no idea how to answer your question about majoring in business in a science degree and then going out to look for a job in business. It would certainly be very unusual, I don't know how that would affect your job hunting. A business recruiter may skim over your application without looking at your actual major, who knows. I have personally never met anyone who did something like that. Most students who do a double major, choose both majors from within their faculty.

same work load, extra time

in terms of workload its like doing

1 degree + 1 degree - 1/4 degree = 2 degrees

you dont do 1/4 of a degree coz the subject for science will count as electives for your commerce degree and vice versa.

if you want to do 5 subject per semester then you can. and also take up summer courses, then you maybe able to finish it off in 4 years.
