download accelerator plus query (1 Viewer)

if anyone uses it or has used it in the past, is there a way to limit the number of downloads to one at a time, even if there are more in the list?

I use GetRight, and you can configure it from within GetRight itself:

Tools, GetRight Configuration (F8)
Downloads (Left Hand Side Menu)
->

Adding New Downloads:

* Add them to the list, but do not start downloading new files
* Set new files to be downloaded later if GetRight is already working to download files up to the Automatic Mode Limit

-> Automatic Mode
* Up to "1" file at the same time.

...

With DAP, however, you need to get into the configuration/options screen,

Downloads, Options/Config
Under the configuration tree, you will find "Connection"

Where it has "Max simultaneous downloads" (a box), you can enter 1.

Then click close.

it is free, unlike getright

it also has better UI

jus thought it would be good, when i am d/ling pdfs.

maybe i should try flashget, which has its installer sitting on my desktop...

Im not sure if this might work but try choosing the "normal speed" for the acceleration mode in options. If that doesnt work, use getright, equally as good or maybe better. I use both DAP for small files (quick and easy to use) and getright for larger files.

EDIT: sorry i thought you wanted to limit the amount of simultanous connections when downloading one file.

I would not be complaining if i was u, i live out of town, bout 20 min outside of armidale, pop 25,000, and i'm lucky to get 2.5 Kb a sec, less if its wet outside. (Dial- up)

Well first it searchers for the fastest server with the same file to download from. The it splits the download to about 8 or so "chunks" depending on your connection and it then gets each chunk from a different server (one server may be uploading more than one chunk). If theirs only one server to download from (ie it couldnt find any mirrors) it will just make simultaneous connections to the server which is still meant to make it faster.

So yes it does "increase" your download speeds.

It will not accelerate your Internet connection, but it will accelerate your download. There is a difference.

You are limited to 64KB/s (512kbit)
If you're upgrading to 1.5Mbit, then you will be able to download at 187.5KB/s (tops).

If you are downloading using DAP or any other "download accelerators", but you are still on a 512kbit plan, you will not exceed 64KB/s (your bandwidth).

Just because you are using a download accelerator such as GetRight, DAP and so on, it does not mean that your Internet connection speeds up, you are only searching for mirrors (alternate download locations, fastest responses geographically).

So you will be able to notice "faster speeds" with download accelerators because you are downloading from 5, 10, 15, 20+ locations, of course you will be noticing speed improvements, compared to a single download (via 1 source).

What am I basically saying?

* If you are on ADSL, 512kbit, then you will download at a maximum of 64KB/s (512/8).

* If you are downloading files, which have mirrors, from various locations and segmenting/splitting the files into chunks or segments, then the application itself will search for mirrors and more download locations. Net result? "faster downloads" (downloads in less time than it would take for you to download "normally" with 1 browser 'download window').

You cannot exceed 64KB/s, so it will not "accelerate your Internet connection".

My understanding:

Download Accelerator = DAP
(I believe we can agree on this).

Accelerate Internet Connection
Accelerate = Increase, speed up, etc.
Internet Connection = Your ADSL 512kbit connection.

Accelerating Internet connection = not possible, this would be illegal (of course) and is akin to "uncapping" a broadband connection, to download at maximum (possible) bandwidth available to the line.

Accelerating download = Downloading files at faster rates, than would ordinarily be the case.

For example: (scenario)

"I download at 20KB/s using 1 stream/jet/chunk/segment, through Internet Explorer's download window"

Accelerating the download:

"I am now able to download the same file, from various sources/links/mirrors in half the time it would normally take me, as the download has been segmented, divided, split up, etc thereby starting multiple connections, requesting the same file, reducing the overall 'download time'"

Sorry, that's what I do hehehe.


I like to make sure everyone knows what I'm trying to say, or at least they can understand it more clearly if I use examples, give quotes and scenarios, define things, etc.
