my old motherboard and cpu died because there was a carpet of dust on the fan of the cpu.

now i've upgraded my system and DO NOT want that to happen again.

would anyone have any dust-free techinques.

here is what i have so far:
*move to a room that is tiled (current room is of oldish carpet that isnt vaccumed daily;))
*get some thin fabric and attatch it on the inside of the case over the vent holes. i'm not sure about this...although my comp is moving to a cool[er] room that will be air-con'd while the room is hot, i dont know what effects it'll have on the cooling of the pc.

thanks.

- Vacuum cleaner
- Paint brush

Use both of them gently for cleaning every few months. I don't recommend you cover the vent holes.

Covering holes might not be a good idea in summer, haha. But as for tips:

# Use an antistatic cloth to clean the case, just don't get it caught on any components (don't want to damage capacitors or anything)
# Use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust
# Don't use a vacuum - the static can damage your components

And every time you open it up, give it a quick clean, especially the fans (not just the case!)

Wow, the static problem with the vacuum cleaner didn't even occur to me. Stupid IT teacher kept telling us that vacuums were the way to go.

They cause static buildup - definitely not good for the computer !

You can get computer approved vacuum cleaners though, mini ones, but I haven't seen any around in a long time, albiet I don't generally visit computer stores.

Compressed air is rather pricy when you get alot. You can buy handheld pumps that can do the same job and have a anti static tip.

You can get a case with filters for the fans.

Otherwise, regular cleaning is the way to go. Just follow what everyone else has given.

The filters screw on the outside of your case and look pretty cool with the right case.

Edit: I posted a URL, but then i realised it was the exact same one as above. :)
