Heys, I'm a comp sci student from USyd and I was thinking of transferring to UNSW's comp sci degree. I was looking through the CSE site and under computer science it has electronic commerce listed as a major, but when I look at the handbook site it's not.. what's up with that? o_O

I really want to do electronic commerce as a major and that will probably be my main reason to transfer to UNSW if the major still exists..

Thanks in advance.

The structure is like this.

University -> Degree -> Major.
UNSW -> Science -> Computer Science.

Therefore, Computer Science is your major. Ecommerce is just a stream of subjects which is suggested for you to take to specialise in that area. It is NOT a major.

Also I can tell you now that having a specific major is meaningless, when applying for jobs you write what you are good at and employers will look at what subjects you have done. Just because you have a title of ecommerce, you can end up doing any subjects you want. So changing uni just for the name is useless. Although UNSW is far better for computer science and far better name for IT in general.

By the way the Ecommerce stream at UNSW is extremely good. It's a 3 part series, I've done part 1 and currently doing part 2. Don't intent on doing part 3 though. I've learnt the most from the ecom course and got jobs based on selling myself on the experience which i gained just from doing part 1 :)

Do you think that is a good justification for switching universities for better job prospects n stuff? I'm not sure what I should do.. i've made heaps of friends at USyd and all that =(

I am not going to say yes or no, I will only tell you what I have experienced.
Personally I would never consider a IT degree at Usyd, if I couldn't do it at UNSW I would go to UTS instead. Working in IT right now I can tell you I haven't met many people who came from Usyd, plenty from UNSW and UTS. I have met some but are rare. Employers just has a preference from particular uni and it's rather obvious when you turn up to graduate pre-interview invite only info sessions and you see everyone from your uni.

At the end of the day if you are good, getting good marks, enjoying it at Usyd then there's no reason to change.
