I've just started studying Emma and we have an essay question.

"Do you agree Emma is a likable Heroine ? In your respone refer to Volume One closely"

Im finding it hard to see how Emma is a Heroine, nothing she does is heroic.

Anyone have any ideas ??

no no, heroine just means the main female character
so the question basically asks whether emma is a likable main character

a heroine is:

The main good female character in a work of fiction
or
A woman possessing heroic qualities or a woman who has performed heroic deeds

emma is the heroine, because she does what she thinks is right and she tries to help people ( e.g. harriot) she may not be perfect, but yeah she tries

you're not arguing whether emma is the heroine, she's not the heroine "because of...", she's the heroine because it's a given. her name was even the title of the book
what she actually does is what makes her a good or a bad heroine. essentially, you need to talk about how austen present emma- ie. talk about the authorial intrusion, austen's sarcastic remarks, how emma interacts and compares to other characters, what social context is she operating in and does she realises her responsibility, and if so how does/doesn't she realise them. and then you can make a conclusion to whether she is a good or a bad heroine.
