For my major economics assignment Ive been asked to write an essay: Analyse the impact of labour market institutions on the demand for, and supply of, labour in the Australian economy.

Ive got nearly all the information I need to answer the question but Im really stuck for an introduction. I know that youre not suppose to summarise your essay in the intro etc but I dont know now to start up

Any suggestions? :)

i did that for my last essay (on the chinese economy) because i really couldn't think up an intro. i ended up losing marks, my teacher said the intro has to be 'creative' and strong.

and that's where i'm stuck lol

It sounds like your teacher is a fan of broad, meaningless intros.

Try something like "One of the most remarkable features of Australia's recent strong economic performance has been a record low rate of unemployment amongst the labour force."

yeah that's a good start :D

And throw in along with George Bush's one that our unemployment rate has been the lowest in almost a decade at around 5.6% and this has been due to Australia entering it's 13th year of consecutive growth.

then go on and define and say that govt eco objectives is to achieve internal balance which means full employment and price stability. However, full employment does not mean unemployment = zero, but rather unemployment rate as close to the NAIRU as possible. That is, cyclical unemployment = 0.

George Bush and i-colour, where are you getting this information from? it sounds great :) do i have to change it into my own words to avoid plagerism or has it already been changed?

i-colour, what did you mean when you said "then go on and define"? are you refereing to the 'govt eco objectives'?

Mine was off the top of the head, but it was probably influenced by every other generic essay introduction I've read. They're all something like "One of the most disputed issues..." or "One of the most remarkable features...". I'm pretty sure icolors was as well - but you'll want to reword both of ours to show off your sophisticated vocab;).
Unemployment figures come from www.abs.gov.au, as do economic growth figures, but these two are fairly known so there's no real need to dig up a source, unless your teacher is very pendantic.

I think by define icolour means you should demonstrate an understanding of what labour market institutions and labour are, and then go on to discuss the governments unemployment objectives.

yes that's exactly right. define the main terms in the question...that's one thing u must do in ur intro. It's just that you have to jazz it up with some sophisticated analysis to make it interesting. Sometimes I like to chuck in theories in my intros too. Eg as shown by the short term phillips curve or something like that. So don't just start off with Unemployment is defined as blah blah blah.....that's just boring!! :D

And re high marks, DO LOTS OF PRACTICE!!!! hahaha. Legal studies was my weakest subject...but I suspect I got over 90 only because the girl in my school came first in the state.....which scaled everyone else up. many thanks must go to her! haha. But legal, basically FOLLOW THE SYLLABUS. Very important to follow each dot point in syllabus and do essays on each of the themes in the syllabus (eg moral ethics and whatever it was, effectiveness of legal system etc) cos all your essays on ur focus studies are going to be based on one of those themes. Morality ethics and whatever hasn't come out in the HSC yet so I'm pretty much guessing it'll come out this year. We predicted it to come out last year but they chucked out effectiveness and compliance instead.

Yup, 5.6% is the latest unemployment figure. Growth is up to date too.

If you want to drop some other stats, or talk about trends (which I do recommend), you can grab unemployment stats off ABS pretty easily, a couple clicks away from the main site iirc.
