Firstly, I think you're asking more about Medical Science than Medicine.

Secondly, Pathology is the study of Disease.

Medical Science is the study of the sciences and technologies used in the medical field to help physicians and allied practicioners to diagnose and treat afflicted people. You learn the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, physics, biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as other fields related to diagnosis and treatment (depending on which uni you're doing MedSci at).

I don't know who that guy is.

no...its a specialisation which you do after graduating form med school. you can do any number of things...including looking at cell cultures to determine the strain of a pathogen. thats why when you get a nasopharyngeal swap at the GP they say they'll "send it off to pathology"

2) in med sci, all u do is stick to a medical lab right? no frsh air ?

er.....no

3) wat about Mac Farlane Burnett, does anyone know wat he did? med sci or med? which field (was it only immunology?)

he did medicine...he discovered specific immunity (stuff like antibodies reacting to antigen) and won the Nobel Prize of 1957?? for it....

1) tru that, i AM in the faculty of medicine and science - hence medical science it is.

2) yeah, he developed clonal selection theory on b/t cells (lymphocytes)

theres a docummentary on Sir Burnett's work, i saw the prev on ABC but dont know when its on. about him and germ warfare with the soviets/communists

(in defense of Aussie land

u mean after an MBBS u specialise in Medical science? yeah i think i kinda knew that before.

Is this tru? : in medical science u have compulsory subjects that must be done, and because its a 3 year course at UNSW, u dont really get a chance to specialise all that much unless u do an honours. This is what i overheard a professor talkin to someone. He recommended science over medical science. I also think the guy he was talking to wanted to transfer from a science or medsci to medicine.

yeah, now im facing a big dilemma:
assuming i dont get into med (99% chance i dont) i was thinking of med sci,
but im having second thoughts as im interested in it only because i like the subject and coming up with ways to sove problems in biology and medical science. I first experienced this when i did the bio course last year.

Anywaz, What if i prove myself to be a failure as a researcher, what else is there? medical journalist? ill probably be stuck in a lab doing the kind of research society is no longer interested in. I mean look at it this way: Why is Ricky Ponting a representative of cancer treatment? because society couldnt care less otherwise! :(

So, i looked elsewhere and with help from the lecturers at UNSW on open day, i landed on Law/ arts in international studies @ UTS. I know i cant go wrong there! its a ~97 course. For the moment, im keeping my options open still. LAter!

OMG! i may have come to the realisation that i dont wanna do med at all! :(

i always wanted to help people and all that stuff through research and practicing med. but i think im more leaning to do liberal studies at sydney UNI.

its a cross between international studies and scicence and math and arts. I wanna end up in a government job and change the world that way :)

having said that, u may not hear from me again in this thread. BYE ;)

well...if you do a medical degree you can still become involved in politics (e.g. joining the WHO) or epidemiology and change the lives of others in a macrological scale...but yeah, whatever floats your boat, I wish u all the best matey :)

Hey DeXtr+ , u say that your lecturers are post grad med sci students right?

well, do me a favour and ask them how much they get paid :)

i really wouldnt mind lecturing and doing research at the same time.
