Fowles uses Sarah’s character to play historical games. She has been miscontextualised and her inability to fit into her society is a result of her avant-garde attitude, which she is unable to locate inside any know frame of reference. She dominates her relationship with Charles, in an age where feminism is unheard of and she is left, ‘enigmatic, mysterious and unable to be explained’ due to an inability to historicize herself.
"I wish to be what I am, not what a husband, however kind, however indulgent, must expect me to become in marriage."
Sarah is presented as the 'New Age' woman, anachronistically feminist in her values, challenging the traditional representation of gender roles.

*Just some notes of mine copied and pasted... hopefully a helpful nudge in the right direction*
