There are "brand" generic types as well, eg, Kingston.

There shouldn't be _that_ much price difference in them, but brand names are probably safer.

Dosen't matter, unless your doing some serious graphic design/gaming/maths it really dosen't matter. If your on a budget, go for the generic stuff. However if you have a unlimited amount of money to spend then go for the corsair/kingston/geil with the heatspreader. In terms of performance it depends on the series and size instead of brand. Hope it helps

Never buy generic RAM with no brand. The few dollars you save isn't worth the possible troubles later on. Get the Kingston ValueRAM series.

As for overclocking, it's more about latency than brand.

I would say stability would be the number 1 issue with generic RAM, simply because soo many stability issues are to do with RAM. But this is a baseless statement as I havent ever used generic RAM, and I haven't heard of people having any unusual problems using generic RAM.

I bought some generic RAM. Crash, freeze, BSOD, et cetera. I just took it back.

Kingston is adequate.
It is alot better with WinXP/Linux/UNIX due to better memory management, but yeah, cheap RAM = stability problems. I think this would be pronounced on Win98/ME/95. But as I said before, I am talking theoreticaly.

If there was a hardware problem with the RAM - any OS would fall over.

Point being, with good memory and good memory management you can expect less issues.

Well the price differance is pretty neglible - literally a few dollars in the case of Geil, Kingston and kingmax compared to completely generic ram. That said I have used brand name, brand name generic and plain generic and had no problems with any of it.

At the basest level they are all made on the same machines by the same people in the same factory, in tiawan.

So why would there be problems with generic RAM, taking into account what addymac said:

Well, first problem is, "Where on Earth is tiawan" ? =P. Kidding..

I doubt RAM from competing companies is made in the same place, especially since they may differ slightly in their architecture - if they were exactly the same, why would they be different brands and prices?
