hey all,
I was wondering what i would need to keep in mind whilst buying a laptop overseas? more specifically, in Hong Kong. eg. compatibility issues?etc?

also, what is it that allows laptops to connect to the internet wireless? and are their compatibility issues if i purchase one overseas?

thanks a lot

Wireless cards bought from overseas would have no compatibility problems, provided the wireless card you have is compatible with the network you are using it in.

Only thing you should watch out for is the detail of the warranty. Is it international warranty? Or local RTB warranty? If thats the case, and your laptop breaks down in Australia, you'll have to send it back to Hong Kong for servicing, which would probably take a very long time.

Other than that, you'd probably have to change the plug to an Australian one on the power adapter cord.

lol close! 802.11b, there's 802.11a, b or g, g is the better one and more recent one. but for centrino notebooks they currently only come in a and b , g comes out later this year.

Wireless cards for the common network (802.11b) would cost about $60+, depending on features etc...

They get more expensive with the faster newer network types.

Just don't make the mistake my friend did of buying a Netgear wireless network card, not knowing his new laptop already had a wireless card built in.....

And the kind of networks it works in, the kind of encryption they support, the range they can operate, quality of the card...etc

Take it with you on the plane like you already owned the laptop from before - no taxes.
