Some of the best journalists around are people who didn't study media at university. Certainly, some of the best student articles I've read have been from students in faculties as far removed from Media and Communications as possible.

That's the thing. No body knows what it is they want to be when they grow up, so people just go with their hunches. Put your preference in now and go with it, and if you don't like it then you can change after a year or what ever.

What's the cutoff for writing and contemporary cultures at uts? Anyway, maybe you could do b arts and you could possibly do some of the subjects required to complete in your desired course (ie.writing) and then transfer later.

lol relax........you can possibly do what my bro did. He's doing a medical science degree coz he didn't get into law. However, he's doing all law subjects and is now trying to transfer into law and he doesn't need to repeat those subjects.

what about UC they have a journalism course - may not be highly regarded and you have to leave sydney but it is there and it was in the 70's somewhere for the last 2 yrs

What ever it is that you want to do, you shall be able to do it. The HSC is not the end of your life. There are always other ways in. So long as you can get in in the first place.

Thats actually true. My English teacher (former NSW Teachers' Federation president, Denis Fitzgerald... so he actually knows his stuff) said that recently there's been a trend of media companies such as Fairfax NOT hiring directly from Journalism graduates. They hire people from a variety of backgrounds (e.g. Law, Commerce, Education, Medicine) and teach them the skills during traineeships. The reason for this is that such people bring their expertise with them, and if you combine that with some decent media skills, you've got one hell of a journalist.

My advice would be to pursue Journalism... but remember, if ever you change your mind about it, or not get into the course (and I see no reason why that would happen, you've got enough UAI there), that's not the end of your dream. There's so many other ways to pursue it.

down in canberra, when giving out cadetships at the newspapers, they look for people with life experience and an extensive portfolio to back it up. this means you have seen enough of the world to be street smart in any situation and you have done lots of freelance pieces for indie internet news or regular contributions for your local paper. journalism at csu offers great practical experience and is the best journo course. the only decent uni course in sydney is uts journalism - the rest of the good courses for journalism in sydney are in private colleges.

i have no idea what i want to do either. I never have. I wish i had some burning passion, or some fantastic skill that could lead me into my career. But i have nothing. Im not particularly good ant anything, nor am i really bad at anything.

I have no ambitions, no goals...

My preferences are all over the place. They are mainly Business courses.. but i only ended up choosing to put them coz i quite enjoyed business studies at school.

I'm such a lost soul
