Hey all,
I am back where I was at the end of term 1 of year 11 except its the first term of year 12. I still have not got my subjects figured out and its already week 4 into year 12. Exams are approaching in the next few weeks and I'm sure I will be fine, but the pressing issue I have is with my subjects. I finally finished business HSC and can now relax that two units are already done, not sure how well I went considering I forgot an entire paragraph in my essay because I didn't manage my time efficiently and wrote 10 pages for the report 😭 . But, besides that I am still aiming for a high atar at anything 95+ but wouldn't mind settling in the 90s range. I want to do a bachelor of science undergrad degree in UNSW and am pretty passionate about it but If anyone's got tips on what I should do with my subjects it would be helpful as doing 13 units in year 12 and 15 in total is crazy and is driving me insane. Here are my subjects:
- English 4u
- Maths 3u
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Enterprise Computing
- Business Studies HSC (completed)
My marks for chem and maths ext 1 were both 48% but i surpassed my chem cohort, unfortunately the maths average was around 57% so I am a little on the lower side for ext 1. As for maths adv I got 69% but that was because I didn't really focus or spend too much time on it as I was busy with all my other subjects. Bio i came 3rd in the grade so i am happy with that and enterprise I was around top 20. English was okay, i did not do the best but was def above average, not by a lot but still above average and i actually enjoy english ext 1 as a subject. I have talked to my careers advisor who simply told me I was cooked which didn't help with my self-confidence or motivation but im unsure of what subjects to drop. Factors such as scaling and some hope that tutoring will help is making me continue maths ext 1 and chem despite them being my worst subjects, i hate enterprise but im doing surprisingly well in it, I don't know if i did well for business so i don't want to be hasty and immediately go down to 8 units and english extension 2 is a pain, but seems like it might be a good boost for my atar. If anyone's got opinions or questions im open to anything, i will be getting my report next week so that will probably factor into my decision.
Currently the subjects that i am open to drop include:
English Ext 2: morning classes are at awful times and i procrastinate a lot but could scale well and doesn't have any formal examinations (for this year, sorry 2026 gang)
Maths Ext 1: I am doing horrible at this subject but I have hope that maybe i could do better if i joined tutoring and worked hard, also it scales sooo well.
Chemistry: Kinda a prereq for science degrees but again it sucks the life outta me and its my worst subject, however i am above the grade average somehow and maybe with tutoring and scaling i could do well.
Enterprise: easy and a pain, i hate it soo much the spreadsheets the data science, its all so bad and so mind numbing i barely listen in class and i want to drop it, but it is one of my best subjects.

As for the rest of my subjects im good, so please send help and advice so i can sort this mess out before things start getting more serious and my 95+ atar dream goes awry.

I think you should keep chem considering you want to do a science related degree, it will come in handy (at least that's what I think). Personally if i was you I'd drop enterprise. Although you find it easy it'll make things hard since you don't like the subject and you'll lack motivation - and you said you find it boring and I imagine it's going to get more boring as year 12 progresses. You have so much time to improve on the subjects you are struggling in, just keep at it I'm sure you'll do well 😊 good luck with year 12!

id reckon if you want me to suggest that you drop smth it would be eng e2. it's one of the most unpredictable subjects you could do and a band 6 internally doesn't always translate int a band 6 externally, there are many horror stories of ppl doing great internally and their external marker hating their work/style and giving them low marks. also morning classes are mind-numbing and annoying and e2 is a huge commitment for 1 unit.

you should keep e1 bc it will help boost your atar via scaling, yes it is possible to improve in e1 with tutoring. keep chem bc its a prerequisite, and keep enterprise bc if its easy you can do well and get it out of the way.
