ok, my computer is skitzing something shocking, for the past few weeks i havent been able to use msn, and for the past few days i havent been able to sign into Blackboard or Studentmail or use msn2go and when people yahoo me i cant see what their saying, and a few other things, basically my computers just being a shit.
so i was thinking of formatting the harddrive or whatever it is you call it, but what does formatting involve? will it wipe everything, even the software that came installed on the computer?
any suggestions/advice would be great.

Yes a format would help, instead of going through alot of diagnostic issues... Yes formating does erase all data and software from your PC. Your pick, are you up for that?

oh, if this is any help or indication, at the time all the crap started hapnin, i keep getting a message that 'drvsys.exe is attempting to access the internet', which ive never had before (not for that file anyway), so perhaps that has something to do with it?...

A quick google of that filename (drvsys.exe) seems to suggest that it's a worm (basically a computer virus, not meaning to belittle you, I'm just not sure if you've ever heard of worms before, and it's easier to explain now than befuddle someone and have them have to figure out what it is from there)

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_BAGLE.X

That site has some information which you might want to read through. Some of it may just be geek-speak to you, I'm not sure :)

More importantly, at:

http://beta.activeupdate.trendmicro.com/fixtool/fix_bagle.x.exe

There's a removal tool which will check for the worm on your computer, removing it if it finds it.

Maybe give that a try and let us know how you go? :)

Edited: Sentences are hard work, minor corrections :)

oh, and when i try to log into Blackboard (if your uni doesnt use it, its an online uni thingy that i have to be able to get into), it comes up 'No authentication credentials were provided with the request.', so do you reckon that has something to do with this bagle worm?

Possibly, it happened to me, we have WebCT and it happened and i thought WebCT was screwed. Sometimes it's hard to determine, because with worms, there's so many of them, and sometimes they vary a little and have new names.

It's more likely to be a different issue :)

If you recieve the following message when attempting to login to Blackboard, "No authentication credentials were provided with the request" then you should upgrade your browser to a more secure version. Typically this means upgrading Internet Explorer to version 6.0 or another browser with a high level of encryption or you can use the procedure below:

The problem most likely lies in the default zone security settings for IE. Blackboard requires Scripting to be enabled for the javascript to function correctly.

To verify security settings:
- Start Internet Explorer
- Under the Tools menu, select Internet Options...
- Click the Security tab
- Click the Internet Zone to select the default security for the browser
- Click the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to the Scripting section
- Make sure the option for Active Scripting is set to Enable.
- Click OK
- Click OK when prompted to change the security level for this zone
- Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Maybe try this (looks a lot like other instructions, but this is changing privacy settings rather than security):

1. Open your web browser.
2. In the menubar at the top of the browser, click "Tools." This will open a
drop-down menu.
3. In the drop-down menu, click "Internet Options..." This will open the
"Internet Options" window.
4. In the "Internet Options" window, click the "Privacy" tab.
5. On the "Privacy" page, there should be a vertical control bar. Move the
slider to either "Medium" or "Medium High."
6. Click the Apply button and wait for Internet Explorer to make the changes.
7. Click the OK button to close the "Internet Options" window.
8. Close and restart the web browser. You should now be able to log into the
Blackboard site.

(Instructions taken from following address, but if you hate pdfs anywhere near as much as I do, the above is probably more useful [exact copy]) :)

Failing that I guess it'd be sensible to ask what version of Internet Explorer you're using? (In a browser window click "Help" then "About Internet Explorer" to check). It'd also to be an idea to check whether you've ever had the blackboard work successfully on that computer? :)

If that box isn't coming up correctly I think it's most likely to be some sort of issue with javascript. The credentials error you're getting when you try blackboard seems to mean that your attempt to login isn't being sent to the server properly.
http://itg.unl.edu/blackboard/browsercheck/nojavascript.htm also says that this problem could be caused by some sort of javascript problem, so we'll check that out first as it seems to be the most likely.

If you go to the following site it'll attempt to perform some checks to determine whether the scripting is enabled and working correctly on your computer.

http://www.woram.com/tests/java-01.htm

You should see something similar to:

Browser and Operating System Details for your PC
JavaScript: Enabled
Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer
Version: 6.0
Operating System: Windows

(And some other stuff that isn't really useful for our purposes).

Try that and paste back and tell us whether that works or not, then we'll see what to do from there :)

Ah ok :) That's actually a good sign, because now we know what the problem is for sure.

first step is to try repairing the Internet Explorer installation. Basically (and hopefully) this will restore the default IE configuration and make sure none of its various bits and pieces are broken.

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.

Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.

Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.

In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf

In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.

Click the Search button.

In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.

Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.

Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

(Taken from http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm )

Hopefully this sorts it out, let us know how it goes ;)
