I can't find a connection or common themes between The Great Gatsby and Elizabeth Barret Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese.

Can anyone shed some light!?

link them through:
1: how they represent their time period
2: how the challenge their time period (EBB challenges roles of womoen Gatsby challenges the careless and immoral society)
3: values presented in the texts i.e. idealised love
4: how the characters obtain/keep their sense of self (could use EBB-Daisy for this one)

Thankyou! That adds heaps more to what I have :]

And remember don't talk about say 'love' within both texts, but talk about how the love is presented, like what aspect of love- so another example as well as idealised love is unrequited love. Our teacher made that pretty clear to us.

Gonna start studying now for the English Module exam tomorrow :(

The Top Notes guide lists linking ideas like:

  • The power of love
  • The constraints upon love
  • The possibility of ideal love
  • The inevitability and importance of death
  • The finality of death
  • Mortal struggles
  • The negativity and hope in life

Not sure what you mean by "value" hope...but:

  • love is seen as the source of hope
  • hope for love gives her spiritual and physical strength
  • hope is embodied by Browning/the man
