im not good with the tech side of computers so i was wondering if someone could tell me what to do, cos im pretty sure my other computer has a virus and the thing is i cant load norton cos i dunno, its being a bum. so i tried to install a newer version but its also being a bum, and i couldnt uninstall it so i just deleted all the files.. bad move i know.. now that i've restarted my computer i get this message saying im missing the system.ini file.. am i in trouble?

okay, i think you just rooted your Windows installation bad.
The usual treatment: format/reinstall/download latest updates etc etc.

but fuggit for now: do after hsc.

anyways crazylilmonkee we need to know a bit about ur system

wat windows version ur running, what norton version when did this start happening, why are u suspecting its a virus wat has it done

ur comp/windows would usually have a backup of system.ini
so umm if that file is missing, check for system.bak or something similar in ur windows directory and rename to .ini

by this does she mean she deleted everything in the norton folder, or did she just delete everything in C:?

theoretically u cant delete everything in C lol.... a large portion of it will be arunning process, and a write protected error will occur if she tries deleting a running process of a system file.

i deleted the norton files..
I'm on windows 98?? i think thats the one
it was some crappy norton i got from.. hong kong its 4.0 (ancient)
windows still runs fine, except when u turn on the comp, before windows actually loads, theres the msdos screen which says im missing that file and cos a program is trying to run it and basically it doesnt exist cos of moi...... hmmmmm

hmmm got to Start> Run

type in

msconfig.exe


go to the SYSTEM.INI tab and tell me if the contents are listed

does it count if i said i searched my computer and found system.ini?
but i dont understand why they said it wasnt there..

and this is what i ended up doing:
cos i couldnt reinstall the stuff, i copied it from my other computer cos its networked.. and thats how i found out about the virus previously cos i had to scan the computer via the network, cos the virused computer wouldnt allow me to open the antivirus stuff, but the virus is still there.. it didnt get rid of it.. stupid computers!! or just me

Must i say its hard for me to help out for the many reasons, im stressed with my exams, the last time i used 98 was in yr 9, and im not sure wat virus u have, it's better to really format, and upgrade the virus scanner, perhaps the virus is recent enough to deface the use of your Anti virus which in a sense renders it obsoltete.

heh yes thanks crazylilmonkee you will to and good luck for your exams, after the HSC if you do have any further computer problems i can happily say i will be at your disposal ;)
