Higher resolution = slower computer? (1 Viewer)

Just out of interest, would running a monitor at 1280x1024 significantly slow down a computer for general use (Word, surfing etc.)? Right now I have a CRT @ 800x600 and a pretty old computer. If I connect a 17" LCD at it's native resolution (1280x1024), will that make my computer sluggish or will it have little effect? (I know it will for games, but I'm just not sure about office aps/web browsers)

Say you have a fancy wallpaper, then the memory required to store that image in memory would increase with screen resolution. Extra processing power would also be required to refresh that wallpaper.

I can tesitfy to this.

I used a 15'' LCD and radeon 9200.
I upgraded to 19'' Flat CRT using same video card, and the FPS definately slowed down.

Yes, thats true, but the MAX refresh rate decreases as the resolution increases.

I can see the wallpaper slowing the computer down, but not what res you run itself, slowing the computer down.

Even changing from 16bit to 32bit color quality affects your FPS.

If its your actual CPU / HDD being sluggish that your concerned about, im not sure, but it defiately affects your visual experience

If your comp is half decent you should notice nothing. Anything that is fairly well maintained and 800+Mhz and the effects are nil. Refresh rate is dependant completely on your video card (and monitor) so for that you should refer to your video card manual.

Generally though you will not be able to notice the refresh difference between 70 and 90hz unless you are a long time gamer.

Usually if the video card can't keep up it effects, computers made post 1999/2000 i really doubt reso makes shit for all difference

I don't use fancy wallpaper...it's just Windows wallpaper. Hopefully it won't make a difference, coz I'd rather have a resolution of 1024x768, but it makes the text blurry on a 17" LCD.

Since you're using an LCD then the refresh rate issue that has been discussed won't affect you. You can probably go to your max LCD resolution without noticing any "FPS" (refresh rate) drop since LCDs will appear perfectly fine even at 60Hz.

Ah ok.
Coz when I changed the res. on my CRT monitor to 1152x864 I noticed that the cursor kind of "dragged" across the screen - it didn't keep up with the movements of my mouse. I was just wondering whether that would happen with an LCD.

Also just wondering whether it would slow down the performance of the CPU. At least it shouldn't affect the memory since I don't use fancy wallpaper.

If you've changed the resolution you should also look at the refresh rate to see if you can change it higher to something more comfortable. 60Hz on a CRT is no good. You want at least 75+Hz to be comfortable on the eyes.

The effect on your CPU should not be majorly noticeable....not really something you need to worry about.

Sacrifice abit of performance and be nice to your eyes.
