Say if a person is 3rd and another student is 2nd.
The 2nd student messes up externals but the 3rd students does good in externals

What happens to both of the students.
Does the 3rd student get affected badly?

Yes. But whatever the third person got in the HSC exam, will also be 50% of his final HSC mark.
