The approach to answering Section II questions depends on the specific question as well as whether it requires an answer that refers to a particular stimulus. Consider Question 23 (a) from the 2020 HSC exam, which requires a response with respect to a given stimulus. In answering this question, you should first identify the syllabus dot point that the question targets. In this case, your answer will have to cover cost leadership as well as good/service differentiation. Now that you are aware of the content that you need to include, the only remaining element is to link the content to the stimulus. For this question, you can explain that cost leadership can assist with the increased competition that the business is facing by reducing a number of costs (which would in turn enable the business to reduce the prices of its products), consequently enhancing its competitiveness. In terms of goods/service differentiation, NESA's sample answer to this question includes the following, which I consider to be appropriate:

They could differentiate their products and add non-denim items and clothing accessories. This would potentially increase the customer base, attracting customers who are interested in non-denim items which may increase sales and profits.

For Section II questions that are not based on a stimulus, the same approach, minus the link to the business being explored (because there is no stimulus in such a case) can still be used.

On the other hand, it is unlikely for a Section IV question to only target the strategic role of operations. It is more likely to target the strategic role of operations in addition to another significant concept within the syllabus, which can be from operations or from another key business function.

Answering Section IV questions targeting the strategic role of operations requires a similar approach to that of an equivalent Section II question. Since the syllabus dot point to be covered is the strategic role of operations, you can already determine that your response can include information regarding cost leadership and goods/service differentiation. Once you have covered the content in a way that directly answers the question, all that is left is to include relevant case study information to support your points.

I hope this helps! :D
