Plans are mainly the key points of what you're gonna write and usually go something like this:

Intro
-define term
-answer Q
-trend etc

Body
Para 1: main point
elaborate and stats
etc

really? what if you don't do a plan?
I tend to write a few points on the exam booklet and thats all my "plan is" my thought process only kicks in during the essay.

look all you need to know to write an essay are 3 simple steps

1. tell them what you're going to tell them (i.e. make whatever YOUR point is obvious from the start and tell them, in the order it will appear in your essay, the arguments/points you will discuss)
2. tell them (topic sentence, argument, explanation/why this is significant/backs up your point etc IN THE ORDER YOU SAID YOU WOULD IN THE INTRO)
3. tell them what you've just told them (conclusion. summarise shit all up in a neat little package, make your stance obvious again and possibly identify further research/questions your arguments raise/lead to)

this is legit what i do at uni 100% of the time and i get >90% for essays consistently because I am the greatest and my shit don't stank

If i don't know crap on the essay topic, then i need to plan to maintain my structure/cohesiveness. Otherwise, i don't bother *that* much (a couple of sentences and i just start my essay)
