if someone where to start unsw in term three would they be a first year student? how does it work??? what happens next year t1 then are they still first year how do you identify yourself. cus some internships ask for like penultimate or final year student to be eligible for them so what does that even mean and it only happens at certain times of the year so how would that work as well??

penultimate = 2nd last year
say u start in t3 of this year, end in 2027 t2 (assuming a 3 year degree), then your penultimate year is gonna be 2026 coz it’s the second last year of your degree
so technically if u start in t3 you’d be a 1st year student but really you’re a “1st year student”until t2 2025 because you’re taking first year classes, confusing
but for internships the penultimate year / final year still works out at least

right and what about people who like fail courses or take breaks in between terms or switch majors so they spend more time, if they get onto the fourth year are they a fourth year student even if they are on a three year degree?

No, how far into your degree determines your progression, not how much time you've spent taking it

Can you reword this? I'm confused
so some internships you can only do during your second last year for eg
so would the people who can apply for those just need to be doing the courses equivalent to the second year of study (for a three year degree) so be eligible for them?
how would that work since each internship application is open during different times so it may not match up with ur degree progression

I can't really talk off of personal experience but from what I've heard, as long as you're near the qualifications for the intended year group, you should be fine. Like say someone is nearly done with their 2nd year courses and is going to take 3rd year courses soon, they'll be fine to apply for penultimate internships given they're doing a 4 year degree. The companies won't blacklist you since you failed to abide by their criteria or something, the most they'll do is ghost you 💀

nah you can cap it harder. straight up cap your graduation date and justify the cap if it comes up

the point of an internship being penultimate/final is that it funnels into a job the following year after you graduate. this is why companies run internships at all. paying a student to run around their office is very unprofitable otherwise.

now if you don't want that job at that company, you cap for the internship about your 'expected' graduation date (in the application and resume etc.), and if they question it because say your transcript has a different date, you cap it with an excuse like 'oh i'm planning to drop my second major and graduate in (insert when their program wants u to graduate)'. and then if they give you the internship and somehow give you a graduate offer, turn it down via some more cap without making it obvious that you capped in the first place. granted, you're probably not getting a job at that company again, and maybe there's some sort of shared blacklist between certain companies
