My multiple choice marks are shocking like my last which was 6/20.
I usually spend max around 5 minutes on multiple choice then start writing. Is it that im not studying or im not spendind enough time on multiple choice.

spend a bit more time on them...like, you dont need anywhere near the 30 minutes or whatever it is they recommend, but by doing them in 5 minutes it sounds as if you are missing out on crucial information that can totally change a question.

Thanks for the advice, should try it, my highest mark in multiple choice ever is 10/20 and it always cuts me off from the 90 i always wanted.

My multiple choice is never any lower than 16, but I can never get 20/20, it's always in the 18-19 range.

They recommend 40 minutes, but I usually spend 15-20 minutes working on it, so a good minute on the 'hard' ones. I always make up time with the easier ones, where once I've read the question, I know what the answer is, before looking at the answers (when you read the question, you gather ideas/thoughts and you can work out the correct answer before looking at all the possibilities).

I don't think 5 minutes will guarantee 15+,
In 5 minutes, you would probably get 5-7 marks, at that.
If you want to improve your marks in the multiple choice, from a 5-7 to about 14, 15 or even 18+, then you should really be concentrating on the wording, looking at all the answers, instead of "guessing" or "it's always C" -- then systematically remove 1 or 2 answers, and then having to choose between the 2 equally correct answers, with 1 "more correct" than the first.

I would recommend you spend 20 minutes if you're struggling with the multiple choice, that's half the allocated time slot, but if you would prefer to make up your marks elsewhere, say in the short answer or option topics, then go for it.

1 mark in the multiple choice could be made up for in the written section, when you write 1 definition or 1 sentence, so make the most of your time.

So, you should spend more time on it, if you're going to rush through it, double the time that you'd normally spend on it, from 5 minutes to 10 minutes, and if your marks double, then spend a little longer.

The most I would ever spend is 20 minutes on multiple choice, for 20 marks, I would normally aim for 12-15 minutes tops, before I move onto Questions 21-24 (short answer/scenario).

if you divide 180 minutes by100 marks you get 1.8 minutes per mark.

therefore you should not be spending more than 36 minutes on the m/c questions.

realistically it should take you less.

if you want to practice multiple choice questions the board of studies website was trialling an online multiple choice question "helper". its down now but they say they will trial it again in the near future.

http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/mcq_test/mcqtrial.html

worth a look.

This generally applies for maths and the sciences, maybe not so for the technology subjects, but I can see where you're coming from. We've always been told to spend 1.8 minutes per mark in Mathematics exams, rather than say, English. (1.8 minutes does not equate to 1 mark in English, but again, I can see the parallel between mark allocation vs time required to answer the question).

Thanks for the link :)
I'll have a look in a few days.

At school, we've been going through Past papers and having a look at typical Bands 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6 answers and the Standards Package. We also have the "IPT HSC Helper" or something like that, which is basically an application which tests your multiple choice skills, giving you correct answers, why the other answers are incorrect, it even times you (I think!).

At the end of the IPT HSC/Help, it grades you and has a corny video of a male/female (depends on your score) and they congratulate you, etc :)

It's worth a look too, if your school has it.
I can't remember what it was called, but it was IPT HSC Help or something. Our school has it, but I don't know how popular it is.

When you're under pressure, you'll be forced to think faster than you normally would, and of course, you would have to 'put down an answer' if time is running out, or if you're going over-time.

Pace yourself, only you know what you're like under pressure; exam conditions, so you'll have to figure out how much time you need to devote to Multiple Choice, and if it will improve your marks, how much more time is required on multiple choice.

Way to go with 91% though! :)

You don't have to continue with that... I think you have misunderstood where I was coming from.

I wasn't having a go at you! :(

I always leave multiple choice to last, that way if you run out of time with the rest of th exam, you can just like put down A for everything, and you wll prob get about 25% for it, but thats better than missing a couple o 6 marks for another part.

Good idea :)

In my trial, I didn't get to finish Question 28 Multimedia Systems.
I scored 18/20 though, for Multiple Choice.

However, I did lose 12+ marks in the final question (out of 20).

I might give that a go actually, Questions 21-24 first,
25 - TPS, 28 - Multimedia

Multiple Choice.
I would only need 10-15 minutes for multiple choice, but they're designed to ease you into the exam as they are 'easy' marks, to get you thinking about IPT. :)
