Hi,

I'm still unclear on how state ranks are obtained. Do the board only look at the raw mark and base the rank off that or is it the modified HSC mark (after it has been compared with your cohort)?

All the smart kids are saying different things.

In simple terms, the students who obtained the highest hsc marks in the subject receive state ranks. Number of state ranks given for a particular subject depends on the number of candidates. So if you got 100 for the hsc exam but had a crap assessment mark of 80, you won't get it. This is why consistency rewards you and that obtaining state ranks requires high assessment mark and the actually hsc exam mark.
I also heard some require comparison with other subjects like extension subjects to discriminate students who were tied, notsurewiththisthough.
