i had a quiz in class today about naming hydrocarbons... our teacher drew all different molecules and we had to name them... she drew for one question C Cl4 and when answering the quiz she said that it was tetrachloro methane... when i asked wouldn't it be carbon chloride as it has no hydrogens, hence not a hydrocarbon she said it was an exception....
can anyone shed any light on this

There are four chlorine atoms, therefore it's "tetra-".

You're right. It can't be grouped as a hydrocarbon because hydrocarbon, by definition, contains carbon and hydrogen. It's called a CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and you'll encounter it later in module 3 - monitoring and management of the atmosphere, to be specific.

By the way, CFCs pollute the atmosphere, a bad thing.
