I am currently in my last term of year 11, and have no idea what subjects I should drop for next year.

I am currently doing:

- English Advanced
-Modern History
-Visual Arts
- Studies of Religion ( two unit)
- Ancient History via distance
- Community and Family Studies
and English extension.

I know I am definitely doing english advanced, art, modern history and studies of religion next year. That makes up 8 units, and I am currently doing 13 and know that I need to drop something because I have been offered to do history extension and I know that it will be too much work next year for me to do 14 units.

I can't decide between community and family studies, ancient by distance, english extension 1 and english extension 2. I am doing really well at cafs but I find it really dry, and tedious and don't enjoy it as I did at the start of the year. I have also heard it doesn't scale well, but its really easy to get a band 5 or 6 in, but I am very over it. I am also doing ancient history by distance but the nature of distance education in year 12 and having to constantly send in work as an after thought would be really stressful, in my opinion. Also, not having a classroom teacher to interact with in real life is difficult. I am also doing well in modern history so that is why I was interested in history extension but I have heard its very hard and time consuming. I think I would find doing ancient, modern and history extension a bit much, but I love do love history. As for english extension, I have hated it all year and really disliked the topic we are doing, and haven't done that well at it. My teacher wants me to stay and try out the year 12 topic and see if I like it better because she thinks I am good at english. And as for english extension 2, I would consider it possibly to do a thesis or creative writing piece, but because you have to do extension 1 to do extension 2, I am not sure.

I need to get an atar at the very least of 82.

Can anyone offer me advice on what I should drop based on the information I have given? I don't want to do over 12 units for the hsc and a minimum of 11 would be good ( I have heard this is a desirable amount).

Thank you :)

Drop the subject which you least enjoy.
I second this.

1. Decide how many units you want to do (10 or 11 is a good number, 12 if you want to be really safe).
2. Look at what subjects you are NOT doing well in
3. Look at what subjects you are NOT enjoying

So out of Ancient, CAFs and English Extension 1, I would drop English Extension 1 and Cafs --> so then 10 units. But I can't tell.

Ancient, Modern and Extension History is doable (represent here) but you have to really enjoy the subject. I wouldn't recommend doing more than 2 major works, because even doing 2 can be a struggle for some people. If you're planning to do Visual Arts, that single major work might be enough since I've heard from other students that it can get far more stressful as opposed to Extension History or English Extension 2 which are generally less stressful. I've done Extension History and English Extension 2 both and with good time management it's fine.

From what I've read I recommend you don't do English Extension 1, since even if your teacher says you're good at english, she might just mean this in terms of Advanced English which is far different than English Extension 1. Not to mention the important fact that you really don't like the subject and if you don't enjoy English Extension 1, the chances are you won't do well in it at all.

Major works are very time consuming, without a good time management, two major works might just be the end of you. But the advantage is that part of your HSC is done before the final external exam even though major works count as part of that. :)
