i wanna get wireless internet (1 Viewer)

hey hows it going

at the moment i hav bigpond broadband cable net with my dell inspiron 8600 laptop

i wanna make it so that the laptop receives the cable signal, wireless ----- without having 2 change plans coz the wireless plans seem over the top pricey

is there anything i can get that will transmit the internet signal from the modem (attached to the wall) to my laptop? i have the dell centrino 'wireless' chip already in the laptop..

You need a device called a "wireless router". The cable modem will connect to the wireless router, then any computer connected to the router with a wire or wirelessly will be able to get online all at the same time. Wireless routers range from $130-$250, depending on features.

You can do a search of the forum and you'll find many threads relating to getting them set up and what to look for.

The cable modem receives the signal from the ISP. The cable modem is also connected to the router, which is responsible for distributing the signal between all the computers connected to it.

ok so in affect, the isp signal is coming through my wall, into my cable modem

the cable modem would then have it's signal sent through the 'wireless router'

and the laptop would receive this signal via the centrino chip that's inside it already, is that wot ur sayin?

Yes, the router will know what signals belong to your laptop, and broadcast it to your laptop wirelessly. The only other thing you have to make sure is that your laptop has a wireless network card (so that it can receive the wireless signals). The Centrino badge doesn't necessarily mean you have a wireless network card. You should check this information at your laptop manufacturer's website.

The word "Centrino" is just a marketing badge slapped on any laptop that has a combination of a Pentium M processor, an Intel 915 or 855 chipset and some sort of wireless connectivity device. The chances are you do have a wireless card already, but its always good to check what kind you have, which will help you decide what type of router to buy.

Yes thats the sort of thing you want to be after. This router retails for more than $76, I would be weary of very cheap items on eBay.

Check your laptop, and depending on what sort of wireless network card it is (802.11a/b/g), you should buy a similarly rated router.

so this means that if i get a wireless router, then it should be all good then? im guessing by 'wireless capable notebook' it means one iwth the intel centrino chip - i rekon my notebook would be capable, its an inspiron 8600 not evne a year old model

wireless routers usually should cover the area of your house + a bit extra. so coverage should be no problem for you. Once you get the router, and ensured your laptop has a wireless card (or on board chip) you should be fine.

Your laptop (Dell Inspirion 8600) has a builtin 802.11b wireless network card.
