My short story is a refugee story, so quite a lot of the symbolism is based off the water and the ocean (being able to see the new home across it, etc). But what if I have difficulty moulding the stimulus (e.g.; if it was a picture of an argument) to the story. I hope its a quote, myself.

If it's an argument just incorporate it that maybe she has an argument with her friends before leaving home? I'd prefer a quote too, one that you have to just use and not one where you have to base your whole story on it

Yeah I guess.
But I think in 2012, I had to randomly work grass into my story. Since that was the most appropriate image.

My story is a little like yours - But the opposite, mine's set in a desert.

My teacher said if worst comes to worst, use imagery or metaphors.

Like there's not exactly any plants in the desert/water and if the stimulus was a flower, use the words "flowering" or what not, or "it reminded me of daisies" stuff like that
