i've just started this I and S thing, and its weird. like... it seems to me in EVERY single thing we read about I&S, the same thing just keeps being said - "it was a conflict between conforming to social conventions and expressing individualistic sentiment." did any of the ex-HSC'ers notice this? because i feel stupid talking about the same thing over and over again. it doesnt help that all our tasks so far are about CONTEXT. what a bore. its same old same old.

oh yeah, and cant someone please explain this to me. the victorian era started like 1830s or some sheeyat. how do we encompass that our whole study of 19th century I&S?? is it important? do we need to make mention of it? thanks u.

haha... funnily enough, ur rite! Individual and Society is def about conflicts between social conventions and individuals.

But, if u look at the 19th century, the story isnt' all that simple- the 19th C was really a time of change - individuals started gaining more rights thru the century- like at the start of the century, individuals didn't haf much chance to socety, but at the end of it, ppl were way more free to express their own opinions. That of course meant that society itself was changing... so yeah, I&S is kinda a bit repetitive, but ull see as u study more texts, the whole conflict thing wasn't always the same^^

wif teh victorian era, that isn't all that important - the individual and society is whole 19th century, not just victorian era. so altho u mite want to mention the victorian era, don't limit urself to just the 1830's onwards!!

yeah the topic is a bit strange and repetitive but it's generally a pretty easy-ish topic.
apparently the hsc questions for I&S are easier than like... crime fiction though.
i dunno that's just what i got.

Well individual and society does get a little repetitive in terms of the 'conflict' and 'strive for self determination'. However that means the questions you get are normally conceptually very simple (compared to say postmodernism) however require more finesse in the presentation of an original, insightful thesis.

Also i used to think i&s was a load of codswallop as a course too but try to keep this in mind: the 19th century was the beginning of when society began to experience a wave of individuals confident enough and willing to overthrow outdated paradigms or challenge the superstructure to seek a more comfortable living. This is supported by the publication of the Communist Manifesto, revolutions in science (Darwin), political uprising (especially in britain 1848 and John Stuart Mill's 1865 British election campaigning) and religious dissenting (the discrepancy between faith and instituionalised religion with its rituals esp. the high anglican church).
