Use the product rule. (S is the integration symbol)

use:
u= tan<sup>-1</sup> x
du = 1/ (1+x<sup>2</sup>) dx

v= x<sup>2</sup> /2
dv = x dx

.'. S x*tan-1x dx
= x2/2 * tan-1x - S x2/2 * 1/ (1+x2) dx

= x2/2 * tan-1x - 1/2 *( S x2 / (1+x2) dx )

= x2/2 * tan-1x - 1/2 *( S 1 - 1/(1+x2) dx )

And it goes from there, rearrange to get:
(1+x2)*tan-1x / 2 - x/2 + C
