they are so confusing, what kind of idiot came up with them...

they should have stayed with GHz, and let amd try match their model numbers to them....

I mean, if i said I had a 353 CPU, you would have no idea what that was.

Well remember, there are many CPU architectures, so clock speed becomes irrelevant to certain respects.

Desktop Processor Family/ Number Sequence

Mobile Processor Family/ Number Sequence

Intel® Pentium® M processor Ultra Low Voltage (or ULV) 7xx

Same thing with AMD chips, where now they're slowly phasing out the 754 socket CPUs as a lower-end user range while the higher enders go for the 939s.. so you hear people saying 'you can actually choose different types of e.g Athlon 64 3000+??'

If you think the CPU designations are confusing, try learning ATi and Nvidia's notation for their video cards. ATi recently ran out of room for their Radeon cards (upto 9800XT), so they started the X300 up to X800XT range.. and some people got pretty confused.
Same deal with the Nvidia FX series (after the Geforce 4800 Tit), they suddenly introduced the 6800.

It gets pretty annoying eh?

I have to agree with you there, it's stupid naming conventions, AMD makes it the most misleading, i hear dickheads, saying a 2500 xp is 2.5 Ghz, like grow a freakin brain. However this sort of naming does distinguish the dumbasses to the erudite ones.

That is my point... the mobile celerons have nothing to do with the desktop ones....

The socket 754 will be used for the semprons
socket 939 will be used for future CPUs
I don't think there will be much overlap
unlike the the P4 3GHz C,D,E,EE

Yeah, vid cards are also confusing, but that is cause manufacturers customise their boards.

the 9600 128meg i got was acctually a 9600SE and some 9600LE are the same as regular 9600s????

then the XT in nVidia cards mean slow, while in ATi it mean fast...

In general for the ATi Radeon series, it goes SE, (nothing), PRO and then XT. Really you should just stay away from the SEs and go for the PRO versions. SEs are like the MX versions of the Geforce 4s. Highly annoying.

And yeah, for the Nvidias the XT means something different completely. After I got my upgrade 2 years ago, I stopped looking up video card progress for about a year and a half.. and so was horrifically confused when I came back to hardware. It sucked lol.

And apparently SAPPHIRE has created fury by selling ATi Radeon 128MB PROs when they were actually 128bit, not 256. So if you ever buy a SAPPHIRE Radeon, if it says 'ATLANTIS', then it's cheapass, but it's only 128bit. Trap.

Oh and did you know that both Nvidia and ATi has been caught cheating in benchmarks? Haha, I had no clue about this till last night.

You're exactly the same with me mate, I bought my 3rd comp 2 years ago.. so I went pov again.. so I don't look at hardware for another few years.. and then when I get money again I get back into it. Confused of course.

umm but with the intel numbering i think its fair..

like with ppl how do u justify that the Cpu speed isnt the only factor in the performance.. like with the centrino tech.. id hav to say bout 80% of dept store customers (about 45% of real/average consumers) would not realise that running a 1.8Ghz centrino will wipe out a 2.4Ghz P4 under certain conditions..esp business apps..
its just intel way of making more dough n letting the customers kno.. and chuckin a AMD lolz
cmon sif like all the bus speeds on the RAM, CPU, MoBo dun make a different?

btw.. intels P4 EE are nuts for a PC.. FSB 800..start from lik 3.2Ghz... 2mb L2 caches.. :| .. oooOOOOOOOoooooOOOOoooo

Remember people, for games the Intel Pentium chips with Hyper-Threading technology doesn't really boost performance. It only really helps multi-tasking.
Many times I've heard people saying how they're getting a new P4 chip, for the new flashy FPS games coming out soon and justify it over an AMD selection by using the 'Hyper-Threading claim'.

And yes, Centrino rocks. Dothan, especially. Similar principle to the AMD chips in general.. like when AMD first became really REALLY prominant most of my friends got confused when I told them that the 2000+ XP actually had a clock speed of 1666MHz.

im confused.... so what are the mainstream amd and intel processors cuz isnt intel releasing a new one again soon..? like whoa.. totally confused.. i can keep up with graphics cuz thats seems like yea wateva.. but like u got the cpus n then the mopthereboards taht use all these diff types of chipsets gaaaaa~..
