I will study IR in the following semester. I have a problem about taking major in IR.

According to ANU website's information, I should have 30~36 units for elective courses. And I would like to select maths courses. I want to know that can I take 1~2 extra courses to complete 42 units in maths to get a maths major? (That means I would like to take 150~156 units for the degree.)

This problem I have asked Science Faculty, Arts Faculty and Student Administration....Science Faculty said that they were not sure about that. Arts Faculty just said that in generally I could not do that. However, SA's answer is I can take extra courses to complete a maths major in BA(IR). Therefore, I am still confusing about that.

Have anyone know about this problem? And have any similar cases happened in the past?

As long as you're doing ok, it should be possible to overload (do more than 4 subjects in a semester) so you can do some extra maths courses so you can complete the amount of courses required for a major (but it'll be a bit of work). I don't think there'll be any trouble with you doing the actual courses, but I'm not sure if you'll actually be given it as a major, as you'll be doing a science major in an arts degree, which I'm not sure about, so it may not be actually recognised as a major...

I spoke to a mate about it - you will have to overload and pay full fees on the overloaded courses (well thats what he said)

If you can HECS summer school subjects (like within the college of law), you may be able to do summer school and HECS them instead of paying full-fees which is such a pain (i know, i'm foreign. see? i don't even speak english good)

There would be no point in going out of your way to complete 42 units towards a maths "major", because it wouldn't be a major... You have to major in something from your degree (or at least close enough).

Why don't you just do a double degree instead?

I think quite a lot of people do it though... As for overloading, I don't think you have to full-fee pay, at least a friend in engineering didn't have to for two extra courses last year, its just extra HECS...

You won't be able to major in maths. I've gone over it before, but there aren't any unique advantages to doing an Arts (IR) degree. The IR degrees don't give students access to unique courses and are simply arts degrees with less flexibility and a higher UAI cut off so bright kids don't feel like they're wasting their UAI by doing a BA.

My advice would be to pick up science in semester 2 and switch to a double degree. Transfers (including taking up additional degrees) are handled internally and are all relatively painless.
