Hey all,
My goal this year is to get an 82.00-85.00 ATAR as it's all I need to get into my dream course. However, I just sat trial exams (my school does them really early) and I feel deflated.

Here are my marks as of now
English Adv:
A1 (35%) - 17/20 - R: 2/13
A2 (30%) - 17/20 - R: 2/13
Trials (25%) - Results not out yet but I predict low-high 70s.
One assessment left worth 20%

Chemistry
A1 (20%) - 24/25 - R: =1/14
A2 (30%) - 30/30 - R: =1/14
A3 (20%) - 29/30 - R: 1/14
Trials (30%) - I predict low-high 80%, probably ranking 2nd

Biology
A1 (15%) - 19/20 - R: =1/40
A2 (35%) - 24/25 - R: 1/40
A3 (20%) -26/30 - R: =7/40
Trials (30%) - I think I flunked this one, I estimate low-mid 70s

Modern History
A1 (20%) - 22/25 - R:?
A2 (25%) - 20/25 - Overall Rank: 4/24 (2 people tied 1st)
Trials (30%) - Feeling really good about this, I estimate 90%-95%
One assessment left worth 25%

Math Std. 2
A1: I did math advanced T1 but dropped to standard after getting a 60%.
A2 (30%) - 29/30 - Overall Rank: 3/33
A3 (20%) - 59/60 - R: 1/33
Trials (35%) - Probably my worst exam I sat, I predict 60-70% and I'm being generous here, although I believe my rank still sits within the top 5

My school ranks really badly (<300) with minimal B6s. I feel terrible and like I just threw out all possibility of getting an 85ish ATAR. How much do I need to clutch up in the HSC to still make it possible?

well, if your school doesn't rank highly step one is YOU need to rank highly, so you've got that covered
but i'm not sure about the rest of it...

honestly? don't give up hope. just study more for the hsc ;;;; don't be dishearted by these results because you're looking alright in most of your subjects and the trials are NOT the hsc. i'm sure if you put in the effort a 80-85 is still achievable.

tbh usually i have no hope in myself when i sit exams and think i failed and then get the marks and its not that bad, learn the art of false convincing yourself ur gonna do good. i did this for my recent modern assignment and did good cuz i just had false confidence so i didnt stress and remembered a bit - plus if ur povo like me u get adjustment factors anyway so its okay

The thing is, I'm aiming to hopefully get Gateway which doesn't accept adjustment factors but a significantly lower ATAR. Even then, I feel like it's unachievable despite being an alright performer in school. I think I fail every exam I sit lmfao (I gen thought I'd get a 40/60 for the math assessment, the surprise when I saw the mark), but this time I know I'm not underestimating myself and did shit 💀

I had one look at your post, and I thought you meant that you got 20-35% in all your assessments... :cold: Then I looked again, and I realised that all your marks are extremely high! Even considering that you go to a lower-ranked school, I would say that you're hands-down 90+ ATAR material.

You don't need a single band 6 to get an ATAR in the high 90s, you just need consistency across your subjects - which you have, plus your subjects have decent scaling across the board. For an 80+ ATAR, you really only need band 5s (realistically, even a band 4 wouldn't hurt that much in case you flop - just don't get it in something like maths std). Also, if you're ranked 1st in 1 or 2 subjects, that's your chance to absolutely maximise your mark, because there'd be nothing to stop you.

It's also worth looking in your EAS eligibility. Some courses with lower ATAR requirements give you a lot of opportunities to get adjustment factors, or other things like portfolio entry. Besides, if it's your dream course, you can always get into uni first and get an internal transfer, because the course entry shouldn't be extremely competitive compared to ones with very high requirements. You just have to demonstrate your passion and aptitude for the field

Good luck!

I guess the HSC is the whole make or break thing!

Ahhhh my standard math trials was horrendous, I'd be lucky if I could even get a low b4 on that. I just hope that one flop won't affect my overall mark too much. I will make it a goal to smash out 2 past HSC paper for math after this failure, the screw up was worth 35% too 😭. And honestly... I kinda flunked majority of my trials.

Fortunately, I'm eligible for Gateway for my dream course so if I do end up getting a conditional offer (praying I get unconditional) they require a much lower ATAR, which is ~82.00-83.00. But like I said earlier, it feels so unachievable and I feel especially defeated after these trials.

All good, HSC is 50% of your final mark so you got this :angryfire:
